Instructor's Self-Evaluation After Videotaping

After each videotaping session, the instructor is asked to make notes about what occurred in the class being observed and then to make another set of notes when viewing the videotape. Attached is one participant's insightful and useful response.

Observations after class and before viewing the video

Strengths
Stayed within time boundary even though did not cover all material
Used both overheads and chalkboard
Writing on overhead appeared clear
Numerical example and graph (on board) seemed clear
Tied topics into bigger picture of course contents
Tried to involve class with questions and "empathetic" role playing
Attempted to be dynamic by moving around the room and fluctuation voice
Weaknesses
Lacked class participation. (Wanted more, even with simple questions.)
Material seemed dry, and I could tell some people were bored
Worried about turning off light for overhead, but then lose clarity
Didn’t allow enough time for students to digest material
Although it was a good lecture, I kept saying, “ we will cover this in detail later.”
Last two overhead were not completely clear because of time constraint
Sometimes hard to tell if material is boring or my presentation is boring
Observations after class and after viewing the video

Strengths
Loud, clear voice
Asked for questions from class
Worked overhead with board
Moved around instead of standing in one spot
Good examples: numeric (on board); oral
Good to ask questions to class
Weaknesses
Seemed slow in presentation
Referred to notes too much
Class looked bored
Sometimes talk to chalkboard
Too much dead/down time between disclosing facts; should
ask more questions to class to liven up discussion
Maybe give too much time for students to think about facts I’m presenting
Watch “bad” words like “obviously”
