Faculty-to-Faculty Observation Guide

Keep in mind that this program is about observation rather than evaluation.  The focus should be on what happens in the classroom.  Not everything on this list applies to all classes and participants may want to modify questions after the pre-observation conference.

•  How does the instructor begin class?

•  How is class organized?  How does the instructor transition from one point to the next?

•  What different types of activities does the instructor include in class?

•  Did the instructor encourage student involvement?  How?

•  What questions does the instructor ask the students?  How do they respond to those questions?

•  What kinds of examples does the instructor use to explain concepts?

•  Does the instructor use any audio-visual materials? What kinds?  How do they support the lesson?

•  How does the instructor include readings or other materials assigned outside of class?

•  Does the class remain focused on the instructor’s goals?

•  How does the instructor present difficult concepts?

•  How does the instructor conclude class?
