Encouraging Active Class Discussions
Nathaniel Prottas, CTL Graduate Fellow, History of Art
Graduate Student Center, 2nd floor conference room
Monday, Oct. 5, 12-1:30
What makes a good discussion, and why are they so effective? How does communication in the classroom fall apart, and how can it be put back together? What can you do to create discussions that get students engaged? When and how should you moderate the conversations? What kinds of questions and formats work for you and others? In this workshop we will talk about these questions and think about how our answers play out in concrete cases. We will discuss how activities such as student-led exercises and well-framed questions and assignments can lay the foundation for active class participation.
