One-on-One Teaching: Individual Guidance, Office Hours and Mentoring
Jessica Lautin, CTL Graduate Fellow, History
Wednesday, Oct. 7, 12-1:30
Graduate Student Center 305
In addition to teaching in front of the whole class, we also often teach students individually, whether answering questions, directing their work or, more generally, in office hours. Sometimes it’s challenging to figure out how to make the most of this one-on-one teaching. In this workshop we will discuss how such individual interactions can help students’ learning experience. We will consider such questions as: how do you guide a student without giving away an answer or pushing a particular argument? how do you manage time effectively when meeting with students? and how do you draw the line between supporting students and maintaining the standards of you class?
